Mattson Academy Online Program Philosophy
I have been teaching Uechi-ryu karate for over 60 years and providing remote Uechi-ryu karate teaching for 20 years, with excellent results. I teach in a much different way than other instructors. The Mattson Academy online coaching program focuses on the art of Uechi-ryu. This means working on the “components” that make up the “techniques” that in turn make up the “kata”. The primary purpose of the online coaching program is to introduce or re-acquaint those who are really interested, the foundation of the Uechi-ryu karate system.
Too many karate practitioners practice a disjointed collection of movements that often hinder important elements of the fighting system they are studying. In a separate study and practice, they learn to spar using a completely different set of techniques from the system. What I have just said is not intended to disparage any individual’s fighting ability. No one, regardless of what he/she is studying, can pass judgement on another’s ability to survive in a fight (street, tournament, or UFC).
Although the lessons are serious business, I teach in a rather informal manner. My uniform (gi) is reserved for special occasions, like demonstrations, seminars, promotions or when I visit another dojo. You wear gym shorts and T-shirt when filming video clips for review.
All new students, regardless of rank and prior martial arts experience, must begin with the “Introductory Course”. We understand that students with prior martial arts experience may find the material in this course to be basic. However, we want to make sure that you can create and upload videos; and confirm that our remote learning method is right for you. In addition, this course will highlight some of the unique aspects of Uechi-ryu karate. You will film yourself explaining and performing the techniques from each assignment and receive feedback on each of your videos. At the end of this introductory course and completion of the two assignments you will have learned fundamental Uechi-ryu stances and weapons.
The student creates video clips that demonstrate kata, techniques, and drills assigned in the course material for each rank. Video clips are regularly reviewed by email exchange; and if you join as a Platinum member, we review clips together during a live monthly online coaching session. Additionally, each student creates a private “blog” which are regularly monitored by me.
The online Mattson Academy program is sanctioned by the International Uechi-ryu Karate Federation (IUKF.com), so as you progress in your training, the rank you achieve is recognized by this international organization.
I am looking forward to working with you should you decide to become a member of the Mattson Academy.
